Just 25 minutes ago, a 3.3-magnitude earthquake struck near Stillwater, Payne County, Oklahoma, USA. The tremor was recorded early morning on Thursday, April 6th, 2023, at 4:16 am local time, at a very shallow depth of 0.8 miles below the surface.
The event was filed by the United States Geological Survey, the first seismological agency to report it.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS) which listed the quake at magnitude 3.3 as well. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 3.3, and the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 3.3.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Carney (pop. 660) located 3 miles from the epicenter.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Chandler (pop. 3,200) located 8 miles from the epicenter, Cushing (pop. 7,900) 18 miles away, and Stillwater (pop. 49,000) 23 miles away. In Edmond (pop. 90,100, 30 miles away), Shawnee (pop. 31,300, 32 miles away), Midwest City (pop. 57,200, 34 miles away), Oklahoma City (pop. 631,300, 38 miles away), Moore (pop. 60,500, 43 miles away), and Norman (pop. 120,300, 47 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
